HAPPY NEW YEAR!!

Hello 2013!! Alas I cannot Swim would like to wish all its followers the happiest of new years, and hopes that 2013 brings you love, luck, happiness and health!
As ever, I am a few days behind with this post (its the 5th now), but better late than never! I wanted to create a post for you that summarized my 2012, and tell you about my resolutions for the new year.
So 2012, all told, was a pretty bloody good year. Here are some of my favorite things that the year gave us (none of these are in any kind of order, I'm just not organized enough for that, not to mention hideously indecisive!)

Top 5 Albums:
1.  Lana Del Rey- Born to Die

this one in particular I hold very dear, "Video Games" was released at the end of 2011 and I immediately fell in love, and Lana released her album early 2012 when I was interning at More magazine. I still remember seeing the poster every day as I traveled on the tube, and I literally discovered more and more of the album as the year went on (through Spotify and such) until I actually received the "Paradise" edition for Christmas. If I had to choose one album to sum up my
whole year, it would be this one!

2. The xx- Coexist
atmospheric dream pop

3. Kendrick Lamar- Good Kid, m.A.A.d City

If Dr Dre says it's good, then it's good

4. Frank Ocean- Channel Orange

Melodic r&b from the enigmatic Odd Future affiliate

5. Deftones- Koi No Yokan

Back with a vengeance.

Top 10 Songs:

1. AlunaGeorge- Your Drums, Your Love
2. Jai Paul- Jasmine
3. OFWGKTA- Rella
4. The xx- Angels
5. Lana Del Rey- Ride
6. Angel Haze- New York
7. Disclosure ft. Sam Smith- Latch
8. Deftones- Swerve City
9. Frank Ocean- Lost
10. Death Grips- Get Got

Top 5 Movies:
1. The Hobbit

2. The Perks of Being A Wallflower

3. Lawless

4. War Horse

5. The Dark Knight Rises

Top 5 Books I Read (NOTE: These are not books that were released last year, I just read them then- I've only been good at being "up to date" with book releases since I got my Kindle!!)

1. Boy A- Jonathan Trigell
A thought-provoking novel about an ex-con trying to re-establish his place in society
2. How To Be A Woman- Caitlin Moran
Honest, funny, and essentially "Feminism for Beginners". Made Caitlin Moran my favorite person ever.
3. Moranthology- Caitlin Moran
See above re: favorite person. An anthology of Caitlin's published articles. Ranges from hilarious to political to personal, a very good read.
4. Requiem for a Dream- Hubert Selby Jr
An emotional journey following 4 people through their experiences with drug abuse
5. Skinny Bitch- Rory Freedman and Kim Barnouin
Not for the faint hearted- a brutal look at your diet in a bid to re-evaluate your life

AND FINALLY...
My best moments of 2012!!
1. Jan/Feb: interning at More magazine
An incredibly fun 2 weeks of work experience with the best selling More magazine, where I got to assist photoshoots, assemble trend packages, and browse fashion and beauty blogs all day (ideal!) On top of staying with my best friend for 2 weeks, this resulted in being exhilarating, inspiring, and a key turning point in deciding what I want to pursue in a career post-graduation.
2. June: Turning 21
My first "milestone birthday" was made incredibly special by my wonderful friends, family and boyfriend. From a trip to Brighton with the girls to a summer afternoon tea party, I really couldn't have asked for a more lovely way to celebrate my birthday.
3. August: Holiday to Turkey
One of the best holidays I have ever been on in my life, it was a perfect mixture of fun, relaxing, getting drunk and exploring beautiful Turkey. Not to mention the absolutely unforgettable characters we met along the way.
4. August (again): The Cure at Reading Festival
One of my longest standing favorite bands did not disappoint when they headlined my hometown's music festival. Not only were they pitch-perfect, the atmosphere was just electric. It was perfect, I hadn't felt as overwhelmed at a live band in a long time.
5. November: Ariel Pink's Haunted Graffiti at Bethnal Green and Tim Walker's "Storyteller" exhibition
A really wonderful and fun weekend in London with my boyfriend where he treated me to tickets to see the incredible Ariel Pink in concert (which was an experience in itself), followed by a trip to Somerset House for the Tim Walker exhibition the next day. This was rounded off by staying with my lovely, lovely nan, who fed us like kings, provided us with soft beds, and the best company anyone could ever want.

oh what a bloody good year...!!!
